About us

Rooted in Manda, Lamu Island

Shuwari Foundation Trust is a community-based initiative grounded in the beauty and resilience of coastal Kenya. Based on Manda, Lamu Island, we are dedicated to creating safe spaces for wellness, cultural exchange, and creative expression while protecting the environment and uplifting local communities.

Our Journey

We began with a simple vision:
"To bring communities together in harmony with nature".

Today, that vision is alive through our growing garden of fruits and vegetables, our community meal programs, and our safe spaces that nurture wellness, creativity, and cultural exchange. These steps reflect our commitment to food security, environmental care, and collective well being.

Our Focus

  • Food & Farming
We cultivate fruits and vegetables in our community garden and use donations to expand our food program. Through initiatives such as Shuwari Sundays, we provide free meals for the community, combining nourishment with togetherness. Our goal is to grow these efforts into a larger sustainable farming and rainwater-harvesting system.
  • Wellness & Empowerment
We create safe spaces that prioritize mental health, women’s empowerment, youth mentorship, and artistic expression. We also host relationship-strengthening events, workshops, and activities that foster healthy human connection through open communication — encouraging honesty, trust, and healing across generations and cultures.
  • Health & First Aid Access
Manda, Lamu Island currently has no hospital, pharmacy, or medical facility, making even minor illnesses dangerous. Shuwari Foundation Trust is working to change this by establishing a small pharmacy and first aid center. With donor support, we will provide essential medicines and emergency care so residents no longer have to travel long distances for basic treatment.
  • Arts & Culture
Shuwari is an oasis for creativity. Through innovative events, music, dance, interactive games, and cultural exchange, we celebrate heritage while building bridges between locals, tourists, and visiting artists. These shared experiences connect diverse groups while preserving traditions.
